Many of you have wondered why we are having a shortage of white sage (Salvia apiana) and when why, when we have it  the price is so high. I recently heard from a native elder in NM that the problem isn't over harvesting so much as it is the drought. White sage just isn't getting enough water to grow back fast enough to withstand the amount of wild harvesting. We have some now but after we sell out we are going to sell just the Artemisia tridentata variety of sage which seems to be more abundant and sustainably sourced until the rains come back. (?)

 

Standard infusions

Standard tea;  leaves, flowers. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 heaping teaspoon of tea or 1 tablespoon herb to 8oz water. Put a lid over it and let it steep between 5-10 minutes.

Mixed tea; leaves, flowers, barks, roots, seeds. Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 heaping teaspoon of tea or 1 tablespoon herb to 8oz water. Put a lid over it and let it steep for at least an hour or more. You can reheat if you like it hot. Try not to over boil!

How to make a Healing Salve

Salves/ointments are used in the place of conventional ointments like neosporin. Typically made to either draw out infection or heal burns, scratches, scraps, bites, etc, all which depend on what kind of herbs you use. Herbs most widely used for antibacterial types of healing salves are: Calendula, Oregon grape Rt, Goldenseal, Plantain, Oregano, Comfrey. Muscle salve typically contain: St. John's Wort, Arnica, Calendula, Comfrey, Poplar Bud, Ginger, Cayenne.

A poultice is basically mashed warm herbs spread over affected area and wrapped in gauze. It's primary function is to pull out poisonous or infected matter from inflammed, wounds, or cysts. The hot poultice increases circulation, while the cold poultice reduces inflammation.
